Walking is the simplest form of aerobic exercise that is very effective in losing weight. It cleanses the body of all toxic materials and makes you feel fresh and rejuvenated. If you move at a brisker pace of 4 miles per hour, you will burn about 400 to 500 calories per hour. If the terrain is hilly or you walk faster, you’ll burn a bit more than that. These are estimates, of course. The actual number of calories you expend will vary slightly according to the distance you walk, the type of terrain (hilly or flat), fluctuation in your pace, and your weight.
By comparison, jogging burns only about 20 percent more calories than brisk walking. But compare how you feel at the end of a 3-mile walk with how you feel when you jog that same distance. Jogging may take more out of you if you are overweight. With less chance of injury and fatigue, even out of shape people exercise longer and more frequently by walking. That translates into a greater number of calories burned. If exercising and walking becomes your habit then chances are slim that you will gain fat. So, walk happily and confidently towards your goal of weight loss.
